The Premier Badminton League, housing some of the biggest badminton stars from around the globe competing against each other, has really taken off in terms of popularity in India. The franchise-based format has already given the audiences some marquee matches in a team format, which has proven to be a big hit among the masses.
The popularity of the tournament is now set to reflect well in terms of the revenues which the tournament generates from sponsorships in the current edition. According to a report in Brand Equity by Economic Times, the earnings of the league from sponsorships are set to shoot up in the range of 45-50 crores.
The revenue of the league in the last edition was between Rs 20-25 crores but the league has managed to rope in a slew of new sponsorship agreements which will see their revenues double up this year.
The league has some of the best brands in the country with mobile operators Vodafone being their title sponsors. Other major brands who are associated with the league include AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds of India), Bisleri, Tide, Apple and Red Bull.
The league has also been a big hit when it comes to viewership. All of its four editions have been broadcasted on the Star Sports Network and is streamed live on Hotstar. The league had a viewership of close to 40 million till 2017 according to figures in Brand Equity.
Star Network are now broadcasting the league in regional languages like Hindi, Telugu and Kannada and are hopeful that this will prop up the viewership for the current edition up to 200 million television households.
