Widely regarded as one of the fastest ever bowlers to have picked up a cricket ball, Jeff Thomson, the wild-haired, original Slinga, was born on this day in 1950 in Sydney, New South Wales. Renowned for his aggression and slingy action to the crease, Thomson was a daredevil back then and brought nightmares to the batsman, not just in their dreams but in reality as well. Making his debut against Pakistan in 1972, Jeff Thomson became famous only after striking a golden partnership with Dennis Lillee in 1975.
Given his action, the body started talking toll even before his career could blossom to its potential but nevertheless, was always a menacing figure in the minds of the opposition. Right from a Sunil Gavaskar to a Richie Benaud to Sir Vivian Richards, Thommo has been rated as the fastest ever to have bowled during that era. Some even go on to say the fastest of all time, with speeds apparently clocking upwards of 180 km/hr.
