Being a football addict for more than a decade now, I had hardly bothered as to how the Indian cricket team has been faring over the years, let alone keeping a close tab on the records these players have been shattering. Despite being a rookie though, I’m well and truly aware of this certainty that the gentleman’s game has progressed big time during the tenure.
I remember the time when my uncle used to watch cricket in our living. Good times! It used to annoy me. But what used to enrage me more was that he also used to share his opinions as to how those demigods of this gentleman’s game should play. He is a typical Indian layman when it comes to cricket.
That generation – comprising of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and co – was the ideal specimen, as they justified the nickname this sport is known for to perfection. And in the midst of all those headliners, a certain Rahul Dravid remained an unsung hero throughout.
Simplicity is what defined Dravid. He was a true gentleman on the pitch and is even a bigger personality off it; till date. This piece won’t give you “10 instances that proved Dravid is a perfect ideal”. I might not be an ardent cricket fan, but I still remember my uncle talking high of Dravid. He was a true critic as I mentioned, but I never witnessed any criticism or any carping for Rahul Dravid from him, or from anyone for that matter.
Cricket, like any other sport, has evolved big time, to say the least, and so has the mentality coupled with the style and aggression. Gone are the days when the Indian cricketers were worshipped as the demi-gods. This fast-track life will now see new cricketers arriving and leaving the scenario and the spectators will get over it. Barring a couple of names, the reality remains that there won’t be any talks like ‘India miss a personality like Hardik Pandya’.
The harsh reality though remains that India will always miss a character like Rahul Dravid. Being a cricketer, especially in India, is a challenge in itself. Masses look up to you and one wrong foot would tarnish your character as well as your career in no time. And Dravid time and again showed why he still remains a figurine for many till date.
When the controversy surrounding Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul surfaced, the first thing we, as spectators, mentioned cricketers need to come back to the ground. The next thing was the mention of Rahul Dravid and the fact that this current crop needs a lesson from this legend. And to say this needs proves volume would be an utter understatement.
Why Dravid of all people? Well, I guess this question doesn’t need a justification. A complete family man, Dravid is and was never about fashion or aggression; he is a perfect synonym to lucid and serene, a personality the current Indian team badly needs in the locker room. So it is safe to assume the U-19 Cricket Team is in safe hands; if only they don’t look up to the current crop for their off the field antics.
