In the world of cricket, famous players are often considered inspirations and icons in their own rights. From fans following their every move, to some even going the extra mile to know everything there is to their sporting heroes.
Though Ben Stokes has shot to fame in recent years due to his amazing cricket form, the England international has quite the private life. Ben has often given us glimpses into his life in interviews here and there, but here are a few facts about the player we bet you didn’t know.
New Zealand connection
Ben Stokes was born in New Zealand’s Christchurch and was there up till the age of 12. He moved out of the country when his father Gerard Stokes, who was a renowned rugby coach, moved to England in 2003.
Not only did Ben’s father coach in rugby, but he was also a national player for the national team. Gerard Stokes then went on to coach Workington Town rugby league club in England. Coming from a rich sports background, Ben happened to play a lot of sports.
In an interview, he said, “Ever since I was young I have played all sorts of sport, mainly cricket and rugby league. My mum was into her sport, too, and she was more of a cricketer than my dad but he won’t like to hear that.”
Angry young man
Known to be an aggressive player in the world of cricket, Ben is also known to be a hot-tempered lad. When Ben got out on a duck in a T20 match in 2014, he went inside the locker room and got so frustrated that he ended up punching the locker door injuring his hand. This led to his exclusion in the upcoming ICC World T20 2014.
This isn’t the only time Ben lost his cool. Back in his club cricket days in a similar situation, Ben had injured his hand by punching another fire door.
Due to his rough actions and temper incidents, his teammates kept a very interesting nickname for him – ‘The Hurt Locker’, referring to his locker room scene. His teammate Alex Hales also kept a nickname for him and another player Jonny Bairstow called Weasley Twins – characters from Harry Potter.
As we all can see, Ben Stokes’ body is a piece of art when it comes to getting inked. The man has covered his arms and back in ink with a variety of creative and meaningful tattoos. What most of us may not know is that some of these tattoos are motivational quotes.
His left arm tattoo reads – Being the best that you can be is only possible if you desire to be a champion and your fear of failure is non-existent.
Ben has been a very big fan of the WWE, so much that when the wrestling outfit made its way to England, he didn’t stop at anything to experience it in person. What happened next was something noteworthy. When the organizers learned of Ben’s interest, a special entry was created for the cricketer and it was a welcome reserved for a special guest.
