Comparing two batsmen have always been a tradition since ages. Right from a comparison between a Dennis Lillee vs Ian Botham to a Brian Lara vs Sachin Tendulkar, the tradition ceases no end. Now the tradition has been passed on to Virat Kohli who is currently, in form, the best batsman in the world. Here’s an instance when another Pakistani after Ahmed Shehzad was compared with Virat Kohli.
Pakistan have been a team that, for so many years, have always been the most unpredictable and crazy teams in recent history. If they look like winning easy, they’ll lose in the most atrocious way. If they seem to be losing, there’ll win from absolutely out of nowhere. Their main weakness has been the batting mainstay for so many years. Even though the likes of Azhar Ali, Babar Azam and Asad Shafiq have shown immense promise and performances to go with it, the likes of Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal have been massive disappointments. Instead of turning out to be a Ijaz Ahmed or an Inzamam-ul-Haq, all they’re becoming is then next Shahid Afridi and Imran Nazir.
When speaking to Wisden India on comparisons with Virat Kohli, Umar said:
“When people compare me with Kohli, it’s not fair. It’s a matter of batting positions. Since his debut, he is batting at No. 3 and I have been playing at No. 6. Let me play at 3 and Kohli at 6, then compare me with him.”
He further added that:
“Compare him with Babar Azam, who is doing well at 3. He is in great form, so you can compare him with Babar,”. Not quite sure if this is just a case of pure sour grapes or excuses but Umar Akmal needs to know that to be a Virat Kohli, first you need to perform on the international stage for the longest of time.
