Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir shone with the bat on Wednesday against Haryana in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy clash. The 61-run knock he played against Haryana came as a big relief to the left-handed batsman, who was struggling for runs in the tournament.
He could only manage scored 1, 5 and 6 in the first three games of the tournament to finally come good in the fourth against Haryana side.
Why is this innings special?
Gambhir had failed against weak domestic sides like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh earlier and the pressure to perform was mounting on him. The success against Haryana must have boosted Gambhir’s confidence. Haryana owns some of the best best bowling line-up in the tournament with World T20 2007 hero Joginder Sharma leading the bowling attack with Royal Challenger Bengaluru pacer Harshal Patel and also Jayant Yadav, who impressed with his bowling skills in the last Test series for India.
Not much can be taken out of this innings. However, for Gambhir, right now every good innings will matter a lot to him.
Delhi still has many matches to go in the T20 tournament and it will be interesting to see how Gambhir performes both as a batsman and a captain. Mind you, Delhi has just won two games out of the 4 matches played thus far.
