The only regret that the cricket fans live with is that this sport is not part of the Olympic Games. There are more than 100 sports in Olympics but cricket is not one of them. Even Golf has made to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
ICC has been very serious about getting cricket included in the Olympics. Despite many steps taken, cricket does not find itself in the list of sports played in the most important sporting tournament of the world.
ICC Chief Executive David Richardson, speaking on the world cricket body’s seriousness for making sure cricket enters Olympics, said:
“We also need to determine cricket’s strategy in respect of participation in the Olympic Games. Is it something we will continue to explore in the first half of 2017 and if our Members agree they would like to pursue it, then that’s when the real work for Olympic inclusion begins.”
Interestingly, Cricket was a part of Olympics’ opening ceremony during the London Games in 2012. This was because England were the host country and the English were the first ones to play the game and at the opening ceremony, England were showing their rich sporting history.
It was great to see it. However, to see cricket being played in the Olympics seems to be a far-reached dream only as of now. We hope ICC is concerned about it this time around.
