The Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia is already gathering a good hype. Australian cricket team have arrived in India and have started practicing. The outcome of the Test series will decide many things, including the team and players’ rankings.
Australia will give fight to India for the number one spot
The bigger picture for Australia is winning the series at any cost because they know that India are tough to beat at home. India and Australia sit number 1 and 2 position in the current ICC Test rankings. However, if they do manage to beat India 4-0, they will get a jump of 6 points to go to 115 points but at the same time, India will lose 8 points to come down to 113, hence losing the number one status. The current form of Indian team tells us that this is very unlikely to happen.
On the other hand, if India goes on to win 4-0, They will see an increase of 4 points to make it 125 whereas Australia will lose 4 points to come down to 105. Even if Australia beats India 3-1, India will slip down to second position.
Jadeja and Ashwin will be challenged by Josh Hazlewood
Currently, India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja sit at the top of the ICC bowler’s rankings, sitting at number 1 and 2 position respectively. Behind them is Josh Hazlewood, who is behind Ashwin by 27 points. If Jadeja and Ashwin fail, Hazlewood might remove from their positions.
All these number games make the upcoming series, starting on February 23, very interesting. Not that Virat Kohli and Steve Smith are not enough to make it any less interesting. Remember what Steve Smith spoke in the press conference about sledging the Indians.
