The Dhoni saga
Just when you expect a calm Sunday, Mahendra Singh Dhoni brings out a storm. There were early morning rumours floating that MS Dhoni was sacked from captaincy, as per an article and tweet by India Today. But India Today removed the tweet and then also, had to reword what they wrote about Dhoni being sacked as well.
Later, Wisden India reported that Steve Smith has been appointed the new captain of Pune while Dhoni has himself asked to step down from him post.
Various sources reporting Dhoni was sacked – Not dropped
1. Reputed journalist Boria Majumdar had tweeted that Sanjeev Goenka has himself said to him that the issue wasn’t with MS Dhoni’s captaincy but he wanted a young face as a captain and has hence chosen to go with Steve Smith as the captain. There were also rumors floating earlier that there could have been a toss-up between Rahane, Faf and Steve Smith for the same but looks like the Australian skipper has come out on top.
2. Here’s a tweet from Press Trust Of India reporting the same as well.
3. Even the rest of the reputed publications and organizations have reported the same that MS Dhoni has not asked to step down but instead, has been sacked by the franchise.
MS Dhoni hasn’t had a year to remember. The year started with him dropping the biggest bombshell that the’s stepping down from ODI and T20I captaincy but with him not as captain in IPL anymore, it’ll be the first ever IPL season that MS Dhoni has not captained a franchise.
