West Indian Rovman Powell has been bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a price of Rs. 30 lakh in the Indian Premier League auctions. The reason why Powell has been bought by such a huge sum is because he has performed massively in a domestic T20 league back in the Caribbean. A couple of days ago, we had predicted that his exploits back at home could land him a hefty IPL deal.
Why is Rovman Powell special?
He was not the most popular face in international cricket before February 15. He is one now. On February 15, Powell did what does not happen on a cricket field normally. Batting for Jamaica in the first semi-final of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Super50 against Trinidad & Tobago, he smashed 95 runs off just 45 balls, hitting 6 fours and 9 sixes in the match.
Not the first time an unknown West Indies player has been bought in IPL
West Indies have become the land of power hitters. Some of the most brutal hitters of the cricket ball presently come from the Caribbean islands. The list is very long – Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Carlos Brathwaite, Dwayne Smith, Andre Russell and it goes on and on. The next batsman to get entry into this list is Jamaica’s Rovman Powell.
Earlier than Powell, Pollard was picked by the Mumbai Indians and at that time, Powell was not a known face and IPL established him as one of the most special T20 player.
