On a sunny day at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, the three commentators of Star Sports were asked to come up with their Dream Test XI from the current crop of players or say players who has been active since 2011. Former cricketers Matthew Hayden, VVS Laxman and Russell Arnold were up for this tough task picked their XI during the lunch break of 1st Test between India and Sri Lanka on Day 4.
Starting with Laxman, he picked 12 cricketers in his team as he wanted to keep Kagiso Rabada as his the 12th man alongside pacers such as Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc from the pace department. Among the spinners, Laxman picked Ravichandran Ashwin and Shakib Al Hasan as both are good all-rounders too.
His wicketkeeper will be Mr. 360 AB de Villiers. The batting department starts with all the modern-day greats such as David Warner, Hashim Amla, Kane Williamson, Virat Kohli, Joe Root and Steven Smith. It was tough for Laxman to pick a captain after selecting the team but he went with Indian skipper Kohli to lead this side.
Coming to Hayden, he too picked Kohli as captain of the side with few here and there in the team as compared to Laxman. His pace attack includes James Anderson, Dale Steyn, Ben Stokes and Starc. He went with only one spinners and that is Ashwin. Moreover, he too picked a South African to keep wickets but no de Villiers. Quinton de Kock is his wicketkeeper batsman. In batting line-up, Hayden has not included Amla as he went with Warner, Williamson, Root, Smith and Kohli.
Last but not the least, Sri Lanka’s Russell Arnold’s team is quite different as compared to both Hayden and Laxman. He has put Cheteshwar Pujara not Root and his spin department consists Ashwin and Rangana Herath too. The pacers are Stokes, Anderson and Trent Boult. However, de Kock will keep wickets in his side. Interestingly, he has chosen Williamson to lead the side and did not pick Kohli in the team.
