Kings XI Punjab have announced the hiring of Jammu & Kashmir captain-cum-mentor Mithun Manhas as the new assistant coach of the IPL franchise. He will join the all Indian coaching staff of J. Arun Kumar, Amit Tyagi, Manoj Kumar, R Sridhar, Nishant Thakur and Naresh Kumar.
Confirming the appointment, Virender Sehwag said:
“I am delighted to welcome Mithun, J Arun, Amit and Manoj onboard. I truly believe they will add value and strength to the squad. We are looking forward to working with each other and having a great tournament ahead.”
The new coaching staff will work together with Director of Cricket Operations Virender Sehwag and will hope for a reversal in fortunes from their previous season in 2016.
After a brilliant IPL season in 2014, where they reached the finals, Kings XI Punjab endured back-to-back miserable seasons, finishing bottom of the league in 2015 and 2016.
However, despite a poor show last season, they have released only four players from the side – Mitchell Johsnon, Rishi Dhawan, Kyle Abbott and Farhaan Behardien.
The roles of the coaching staff has also been clarified with Mithun Manhas as the assistant coach, J Arun Kumar as the batting coach, Amit Tyagi will be the Physiotherapist, Manoj Kumar will act as the Yoga instructor, R Sridhar will be the fielding coach, Nishant Thakur will be the Strength and Conditioning coach and Naresh Kumar will be the masseur. They will take over from Sanjay Bangar.
