South African fast bowler Morne Morkel, who is set to make his international comeback for South Africa in the ODI series against New Zealand, has revealed that he was told by the doctors that he would never be able to play cricket ever again. Morkel suffered the back injury during South Africa’s tri-series in West Indies in 2016.
Was told that international career is over
Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Morkel revealed that it was very tough to diagnose the details of his back injury. “No one was 100 percent sure of what was going on with my back and to be honest there was a time when I was in doubt about my future.”
He further revealed that his doctor told him that his international career was over. “I was told that I would never be able to play cricket again and it was a mental thing to go to the gym.”
Morkel then decided to seek second opinions on the extent of his injury and he is happy that he took that call. After a long rehabilitation process, Morkel is finally fully fit and is ready to make a comeback against New Zealand in the ODI series.
In order to not put too much stress on his body and be completely fit for South Africa’s tour of England, Morne Morkel has also decided to skip the 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League.
