Chris Gaffaney, one of the on-field umpires designate to officiate in the third Test match of the four-match Test series between India and Australia in Ranchi almost made an epic blunder, which ended up mercilessly trolling the Australian team.
The incident occurred in the 140th innings of Day 4 in Ranchi. It was an intense battle going on between the two top ranked teams of Test cricket, when Gaffaney decided that it was probably time to relieve some of the pressure and added some much needed comic relief to the contest.
Josh Hazlewood bowled an excellent bouncer and Pujara went for a hook shot but failed to connect with the delivery. Had the ball hit the bat, it could have ended up anywhere on the field, but fortunately for Pujara it didn’t.
The Australians still appealed for the wicket ferociously and Gaffaney raised his finger, making everyone believe that he was set to give the verdict of the batsman being out, only to pull out at the last second and ended up scratching his head. This drew a loud chuckle from everyone at the ground including fellow umpire Ian Gould and third umpire Nigel Llong, except the Australians, who trying out their best Gaffaney mimicry, were left scratching their heads.
