It will be tough for a South African cricket fan to read and watch this. Yes, this is about that dropped catch in 1999 ICC Cricket world cup and it was dropped on this very day, 17 years ago.
It was Steve Waugh who was reprieved. The Australian captain was on 56 at that time. He went on to score an awesome century which not only made Australia win that match but take the top spot of the super-six table.
Herschelle Gibbs was fielding at mid-wicket when Lance Klusener bowled an in-swinging delivery to Steve Waugh. Steve played straight that ball into the hand of Gibbs, who after having taken the catch began celebrating prematurely only to spill it the next second.
Steve Waugh has supposedly said this to Gibbs after the dropped catch, “How does it feel to drop the world cup, Herschelle.” It must have hurt right in the center.
