India captain Virat Kohli scored a vital century on the final day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. This was his 18th Test century. With that he became only the second Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to record 50 international centuries. Kohli also has 32 ODI centuries, which is also the second most behind Tendulkar’s 49. Kohli scored an unbeaten 104 off just 119 deliveries to help Sri Lanka set a target of 231 to win the Test.
Kohli also has 14 Test fifties to his credit, to go along with 45 ODI and 18 T20I fifty. Considered to be one of the best batsmen in the world at the moment, Kohli has also led India to series wins against Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka (twice) and also the West Indies. Under his reign, India have attained the No. 1 Test rankings and were also briefly on top of the ICC ODI rankings as well.

In the ongoing Test, Kohli was dismissed for a duck in the first innings. As a result, that makes him the only Indian captain to have scored a duck in the first innings and followed that up with a ton in the second.

In the rain-curtailed match at the Eden Gardens, India were bundled out for 172 in the first innings. As the days progressed, it became easier to bat and Sri Lanka as a result cored 294, taking a lead of 122. Kohli made a sporting declaration after he got to his century setting Sri Lanka 231 to win from 47 overs on the final day of the Test.
