The flamboyant Delhi opener made his First-Class debut with the 1999-2000 Ranji Tropphy series and took three years to make the cut to the Indian side. Groomed in the Virender Sehwag mould, Gambhir carried forward the legacy of talented Indian openers. However, the start was not as consistent for the Delhi star. Lack of form saw him getting dropped from India’s 2007 World Cup squad, but Gambhir replied his critiques with strong domestic performance and regained his spot.
However, Gambhir’s contributions towards India’s World Cup 2011 title-win have to be the peak of his career. He scored half-centuries against England, South Africa and Australia while standing like a rock in the final against Sri Lanka, scoring 97, after India had lost Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar cheaply.
Gambhir is a successful IPL captain, having led Kolkata Knight Rider to two titles. He was one of the leading run-getters for the side. However, he was not picked by KKR in IPL 2018 auctions and found a new home in Delhi Daredevils.
