You may know it as Full English, Fry- Up or Full Monty, the wholesome breakfast spread of the United Kingdom is a must-have. Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland include their regional variations to the spread. The spread found in England includes bacon, fried, poached or scrambled eggs, fried or grilled, fried mushrooms, fried bread or buttered toast, and sausages (locally known as bangers). The food is traditionally served with a cup of tea or coffee (recent alternative). It is so popular in the United Kingdom that most pubs and eateries serve it as an ‘All-Day Breakfast’ option so you can try it any time of the day (just make sure to have a big appetite)!
Tea & Crumpets
Nobody does evening tea like the British! It is one of the most enjoyable social events in the United Kingdom. People gather to enjoy freshly brewed tea with crumpets or a choice of sweet and savoury snacks. A crumpet is a type of bread most closely related to the English muffin. Crumpets taste very similar to English muffins and even look like them. Nowadays, an assortment of finger foods and snacks such as mini sandwiches, muffins and tarts get served with tea.
It is a mixture of strawberries, meringue shards and whipped double cream. The dessert is believed to have originated at Eton College and gets served at the annual cricket match against the pupils of Harrow School. Eton mess was served in the 1930s in the school’s small shop and was originally made with either strawberries or bananas mixed with ice-cream or cream. The meringue was a later addition. An Eton mess can be made with many other types of summer fruit but strawberries are regarded as more traditional.
Traditionally served on a Sunday (hence, the name), Sunday Roast is a family meal that includes vegetarian, meat and accompaniments for everyone to enjoy. The large spread generally includes chicken, lamb, pork or roast beef, a range of boiled, steamed and/or roasted vegetables (generally roasted or mashed potatoes, and boiled carrots and peas), Yorkshire pudding and a delicious gravy prepared with juices released by the roasting meat, veggie scraps and stock/thickening agent.
