Touted as one for the future, Netherlands’ Memphis Depay never actually lived upto the expectations that surrounded him when he made a move to Old Trafford from PSV. His tenure was majorly affected because he failed to adapt himself to the rigours of the Premier League.
Louis van Gaal kept his cool, but as soon as Jose Mourinho arrived, Depay’s tenure was cut short as he clearly wasn’t the one who would fit in Mourinho’s plans.
His on the field criticism was quite evident, but besides that, he was majorly lambasted for his off the field antics. His rich hobbies of luxury products were one of those many reasons for his criticism and quite rightly so. When you are 22-year-old and have the income coming from almost every direction, these kind of hobbies are quite evident, but the spectators expect something logical, which Depay never actually delivered – both on and off the field.
Dressed like a Peruvian pan Flute player –
Back in 2015, while his national call-up, Depay decided to wear one of the most ridiculous attires and the former Ajax and FC Twente coach Co Adriaanse was spot on to criticize the player.
“He needs to be corrected.
“He must realise that he is a member in a football team, that he is not just an individual, a 100 metre sprinter like Usain Bolt.
“He arrived as a Peruvian pan flute player at [Holland’s team hotel] Huis ter Duin. If you are a young boy and still have not done anything, do not play dress up as you report to the coach. [Cristiano] Ronaldo does that, but at least he is proven”.
One of the most expensive –
Depay’s Manchester United arrival was well hyped and quite rightly so because the player was a sensation in Eredivisie a season back. And with the arrival, the glamour came and soon came the luxuries.
After playing the pre-season games, the Dutchman returned to England wearing the attire which was worth around £9,923.
Young guns in the industry surely love to show off their fashion perception, but sometimes, it goes horribly wrong.
