Chelsea jumped to within a point of Manchester United after they sealed a 2 – 0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge. Two second-half headers, one each from Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso, ensured all three points after the Blues were left frustrated in the first half. With Manchester City slowly ensuring an improbable gap between them and the rest, the defending champions made most of the other Manchester’s slip to come within touching distance of the second spot. A look then at how each of the Chelsea players fared during their match.
Thibaut Courtois: 7/10
Was up to the task whenever called upon, but was rarely troubled. Dealt all the situations with confidence and authority.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 8/10
Another brilliant all-round performance from the Spaniard. Defensively very solid and attacked effectively throughout. Came up with yet another assist for Morata to put away. That is the sixth time this combination has worked this season.
Gary Cahill: 7/10
Played the more central role in defense and looked his part. Cleared well and made sure there were no threats but was rarely troubled in any case.
Antonio Rudiger: 7/10
Another good performance by the German. Hardly troubled at the back, and he ventured forward often as well. Brought out a save from Burnley keeper Mat Ryan from one of his efforts from distance.
Victor Moses: 6/10
Showed great energy and desire on the right flank, but missed a few easy chances to score. He still does not look like the Moses of last season.
N’Golo Kante: 7/10
Performed his usual role to perfection. Tackled and intercepted well, and also showed some good skills in going forward.
Marcos Alonso: 8/10
While defensively he was hardly required, his attacking prowess has been sensational. He had been denied twice by a couple of good saves from Ryan, after which he deftly headed home the ball from Fabregas’ corner.
Tiemoue Bakayoko: 6/10
The Frenchman is steadily improving with each outing and this was one of his better performances. However, he missed an easy chance in the first half but overall showed a composed performance wherein he was feeding balls as well as attacking.
Cesc Fabregas: 8/10
A classic display from Cesc. Was splitting open the Brighton defense with his incisive passing, and took the corner from which Alonso scored the second.
Eden Hazard: 8/10
Another lively performance by the Belgian. Showed great dribbling skills as he tore apart the Brighton defense. Came very close to scoring twice, and influenced the game to good effect.
Alvaro Morata: 9/10
A threat from the start. He showed the Blues what was amiss at Goodison Park. 52 seconds after the restart, he got his head once more to Azlipicueta’s cross and scored the opener. Made his presence felt all the time.
Looked very out-of-stride after he replaced Hazard with about 20 minutes left, and failed to create an impact after coming on.
Michy Batshuayi: N/A
Came in the 82nd minute for Morata.
Danny Drinkwater: N/A
Came in for N’Golo Kante with six minutes left on the clock.
