Liverpool edged Merseyside rivals Everton 2 – 1 in the third round of the FA Cup at Anfield, as the Reds’ £75 million man Virgil van Dijk scored the winner on his debut. James Milner’s first-half penalty was canceled out by Gylfi Sigurdsson’s sweet finish from a counter, but the former Southampton player stole the headlines when he rose high to head home Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s corner. For the Toffees it was yet another setback at Anfield, and we take a look at how the players of each team fared on the night.
Loris Karius: 6/10
Mostly a spectator during the match, although had a couple of nervy moments when a dropped a Sigurdsson free-kick and had a mix up with van Dijk. Was left stranded when the goal went in, but covered his basics and had no major problem to deal with.
Joe Gomez: 6/10
Had a good first half where he was solid, but missed an easy chance early on in the second as he put a free header wide. Was slightly disorganized in the second period though.
Joel Matip: 6/10
A mixed performance really. Was solid and won some good headers but came up with some wayward ones as well. However, has all the makings of forging a solid partnership with van Dijk.
Virgil van Dijk: 8/10
A dream debut for the Dutchman. A towering presence at the back, where he won almost all of his headers, and at the front as he headed home the winner. Wasted a big chance with another one of his headers, but flawless apart from that.
Andy Robertson: 8/10
Probably his best game for the Reds. Was as solid as they come at the back, hardly ever allowing space for the Everton attackers and also caused them problems while pushing forward.
Emre Can: 7/10
A strong performance in midfield from the German. Played an important role in shielding the Liverpool defence. His passing at times was sub-par though.
James Milner: 7/10
Worked tirelessly in midfield and ran his heart out in the match. Showed nerves of steel to score from the spot, and had a good outing.
Sadio Mane: 6/10
Threatened the Everton defence with his powerful runs and showed great energy levels. However, did not really cause any damage as there was not much output for the efforts.
Adam Lallana: 7/10
Shaping well following the injury lay-off. Understandably rusty, but also made some good runs and threatened with his pace. Won the penalty from which Milner scored.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: 8/10
An excellent show from the Englishman. Showed great energy and pace to cause problems for the Everton defence tinme and again. Distributed play very well too, although was wasteful at times. However, it was from his corner that van Dijk scored.
Roberto Firmino: 6/10
Showed good feet and some deft touches. Worked his heart out without bringing in any threat though. At times, careless with his game-play.
Georginio Wijnaldum: 6/10
Came in for Lallana with 20 minutes remaining and stabilized the midfield.
Dominic Solanke: 5/10
Came on in the 77th minute for Milner. Got booked, and needs to work on holding off defenders.
Trent Alexander-Arnold: 6/10
Also came in the 77th minute and slotted in defence with ease. Hardly troubled for the remainder of the game.
Jordan Pickford: 5/10
Made some good saves, although was shielded by Everton’s back four. However, both his decision making and commitment came under the scanner when he failed to reach Oxlade-Chamberlain’s corner from which van Dijk scored. Little chance with the penalty.
Jonjoe Kenny: 7/10
An excellent show from the 20-year-old. Kept at bay the likes of Mane and Firmino and also surged forward at times. The Englishman is a bright prospect.
Phil Jagielka: 7/10
Defensively solid, and surprised all when he surged forward on a counter to lay the ball off for Sigurdsson to finish off. Van Dijk rose taller to score the winner though.
Mason Holgate: 6/10
Gave away a soft penalty, when Lallana made most of the fact that Holgate’s arms were around him. Regained composure to put in a solid performance though.
Cuco Martina: 6/10
Was very solid in defence at times, although there were the occasional lapses wherein he was exposed by the Liverpool attack.
James McCarthy: 7/10
Engineered the Everton midfield to good effect. Put in some good passes, some strong tackles and also made some speedy runs. Looked to tire out later though before he was substituted off.
Morgan Schneiderlin: 7/10
Forged a good partnership with McCarthy in the middle. Good passing play from the Frenchman and used his speed to attack at times.
Yannick Bolasie: 8/10
A superb show by the Frenchman. His pace and power kept the Liverpool defence on their toes for the entire 90 minutes. Was involved in the link-up play that led to the goal.
Gylfi Sigurdsson: 7/10
Showed some good defensive attributes as well as attacking flair. Came up with a cool and nicely-worked finish for Everton’s equaliser. However, his gameplay in the final third often left a lot to be desired for.
Dominic Clavert-Lewin: 6/10
Not an overwhelming performance by any means. Tried to give his all, but never caused any major threat. A lot of improvement required.
Wayne Rooney: 5/10
A very frustrating night for the former Manchester United player, and he made no efforts to hide it. Got booked as early as the fifth minute. Couldn’t get past the Liverpool defence, and was subbed off early in the second phase.
Ademola Lookman: 7/10
Created an instant impact after replacing Rooney in the 51st minute. Made the equaliser, and was a threat throughout with his speed.
Oumar Niasse: N/A
Came on with only nine minutes left on the clock.
Tom Davies: N/A
Came on only in the 86th minute.
