Steven Gerrard is a bonafide legend of English and world football and one of the greatest midfielders in the history of the game. He had incredible achievements in his glittering career, but one of his primary dreams always remained unfulfilled, that of lifting the Premier League title with Liverpool.
In the 2013/14 season, Liverpool were in the pole position, to win the league title after 24 years, with Gerrard being at the heart of Liverpool’s title challenge, being at his influential best. But it wasn’t meant to be, as Gerrard slipped in a crucial game against Chelsea, allowing Chelsea striker Demba Ba to score, which led to a 2-0 victory, effectively costing Liverpool the title. The slip was all the more cruel on Gerrard, as in a previous match against Manchester City, Gerrard had given a rousing speech to his team after the victory, urging them that the Premier League title would not slip away from their grasp. Gerrard has said that this slip still haunts him to this very day.
Gerrard slipped while receiving a pass which allowed Demba Ba to score the opening goal for Chelsea; Chelsea went on to win 2–0, which meant that Liverpool’s title hopes were no longer in their own hands.
This to this day remains one of the most heartbreaking moments in football.
