Alan Shearer is one of the greatest pure no.9’s in the history of football. He was the prototypical English frontman; strong, could hold the ball up, finish and score some absolute scorchers.Shearer was idolized at Tyneside at Newcatle United and it’s easy to see why due to goals like these.
Regarded as one of the best goals ever scored in the English football, the technique on display by Shearer was simply staggering.
As great as the goal was, it was no big deal for Shearer. He is arguably the greatest No.9 to grace the Premier League and he had a simple mindset; see the ball early and hit the ball early. This served him well throughout his career as he would end up scoring 260 goals in his Premier League career.
Shearer though was humble enough in his assessment of the strike, saying, “That volley was one in a hundred I think. Volleying is such a difficult technique, and it was coming out of the sky too, so to hit it 25 yards into the top corner was something. But when I hit it I knew I’d caught it sweet and the keeper wasn’t stopping it.”
