Yaya Toure is the new name on the list of footballers retiring from the game and walking out a legend. The 35-year-old played as a midfielder for Manchester City and FC Barcelona. Born Gnégnéri Yaya Touré, the Ivorian professional footballer has decided to pursue a career in coaching.
His life has been filled with inspirational moments and some really interesting facts. Check them out!
Like most sports personalities who went from rags to riches, Yaya Toure did not have a great childhood either. Second in line among the nine kids of Mr. and Mrs. Toure, Yaya did not have much, to begin with. He survived on one meal a day and assisted his brother Kolo in polishing shoes to supplement their father’s poor income.
Yaya has earned a number of nicknames ever since he started playing football as a child. Back in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire in West Africa, he was given the name of ‘the tall introvert’ mainly due to his towering height and the fact that he mostly kept to himself. When he joined Barcelona FC in 2007, he was titled as ‘firewall’ for his ability to block any incoming advances.
Yaya got married to Gineba in 2004 and they are parents to three adorable kids. He has often confessed his undying love for his wife. But a while back he was caught in between a scandalous affair where he was caught getting cozy with another woman. Clearly, Gineba has absolute faith in her man because she did not leave his side during the difficult phase.
Compared to Patrick Vieira
During his brief spell in Greece and France, Yaya was often compared with Patrick Vieira, a professional French footballer. In fact, he was often called ‘the new Patrick Vieira’. Both midfielders, their massive upper body could push the footballers to run the length of the football field and be swift in their actions. In case you didn’t know, Yaya’s jersey number while at Barcelona was a nod to Vieira’s jersey number 24. But when he joined Manchester City, Yaya simply swapped the numbers around!
