The 2006 FIFA World Cup final between Italy and France was a fiercely contested affair. Italy eventually triumphed in the contest, winning the World Cup on penalties. More than the match itself, the final though is immortalized for Zinedine Zidane being sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi.
Zidane, regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the game, had announced that the FIFA World Cup would be his final tournament as a player. With his majestic brilliance, he had led France to the final. There were lots of words exchanged with the Italian centreback Marco Materazzi throughout the game and then, Zidane completely lost it. So iconic was the moment, that it has been immortalized with a bronze statue.
Apparently, Materazzi crossed the line and had some choice words to say about Zidane’s mother and sister. Other reports also claim that Marco insulted Zidane’s religion of Islam.
This to this day, remains one of the most iconic moments in FIFA World Cup history.
