Indian talismanic footballer Sunil Chhetri, who recently broke Indian legend Bhaichung Bhutia’s record of most goals in the I-League with his 90th strike has spoken on his achievement. Chhetri scored the historic 90th goal, which made him the top Indian scorer in I-League history, against Aizwal FC, playing for Bengaluru FC. It took Chhetri only 14 seasons to achieve this feat, while it took Bhutia 17 seasons to score 89 goals.
Chhetri also revealed an amusing tale, claiming that his father thought that he had broken the record a long time ago. He also revealed that his father thinks that Chhetri has been docked of 8 goals from his goalscoring record.
Chhetri said, “My father was counting it 96. He says ‘whoever is counting has taken eight goals of yours, I don’t know how’. But only when I was told that it’s 88 now and I am one away from Baichung bhai, then it struck me. But as I said, my father is already counting 98 now. He doesn’t tell me these things, he tells my Mum and Mum tells me.”
Chhetri also took to Twitter to thank his fans for always supporting him throughout his career.
Humbled and grateful like always on reading all the messages coming through. Never played for milestones but happy to have reached one.
