There have been many sports personalities who have set benchmarks in their prime time that haven’t been reached by fellow athletes even today. These evergreen stars have engraved their names in the history of the world by defying sports limits and climbing up to the golden ranks of legends.
One such global legend is Argentina’s, Diego Maradona. There is no football fan in the world or even someone who is into sports, who doesn’t know the name let alone the man himself. Arguably and widely considered the best to ever play the game, Diego was one of football’s most controversial and iconic stars back in the 1980s and 1990s.
It is only common that someone of his stature has dozens of documentation, films, series, etc. made so that fans around the world get a closer look into the life of a megastar like Diego. Now the news is out that there is a documentary on the ‘Hand of God’ player which is set to release.
Diego’s life has been nothing short of eventful, with the Argentine attracting and courting controversy both on and off the field. The documentary simply titled, ‘Diego Maradona’ will focus on his rather not so blissful life in Italy back in the 1980s.
The documentary is directed by British Academy-award winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia, who shot to fame for ‘Senna’ and ‘Amy’. The feature-length documentary will specifically focus on Diego’s move to Napoli on July 5, 1984, followed by the resulting 7 years in which ‘all hell broke loose’.
This period, though a dark time in the life of the legend, saw the club guided from relegation to winning two leagues, a UEFA Cup and two Italian cups.
The move of the legend to Napoli has stirred quite the storm. While his divine performance on the pitch made the world fall in love with him, his life outside was rather cursed. The city and its grim life consumed him. While most people knew Maradona, very few knew Diego.
The documentary is produced in cooperation of Maradona himself, using around 500 hours of previously unseen footage from his personal archives. This grants a glimpse behind the scenes of one of the football’s most iconic and yet controversial characters.
Here’s the official trailer for the film.
If you have been a football fan all your life, then you will experience a very strong excitement as we do now, to wait and see the rise, downfall and everything in between of someone whose name is embedded in our hearts forever when it comes to ‘the beautiful game’.
‘Diego Maradona’ is set to debut at Cannes before hitting cinemas around the world on June 14.
