It will be a gang of 14 Russian girls who will play the pivotal role of ball girls at the FIFA 2018 World Cup’s opening match between Russia and South Africa at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. This is the first time that an all-female group will take up the task at the opening match of FIFA.
According to Reuters, the girls, aged 13 to 16, are from the small Russian town of Agryz. The girls were selected by the Russian national team after they got selected as “inspiring entrants” in the national junior football tournament.
“It’s like a fairytale for them,” said their coach, Ildar Idiyatov. The girls play football for a team in Tatarstan region of Russia.
In total, 776 young youngsters will play the role of ball boys and ball girls in the tournament reported the local World Cup organizing committee.
“Women are not a weak sex, we are always ready to compete with boys at the same level,” said Daria Vasilyeva, one of the ball girls selected for the opening match.
“At the World Cup, all of us are united and we are all just as worthy and can also pass the balls to the football teams.”
In the month-long football extravaganza, 32 teams will clash to win the dream World Cup trophy. In total, 64 matches will be played at the World Cup.
