It took them 20 years and 3 days, but the trophy is back home. France have defeated Croatia 4-2 to win arguably the most coveted trophy there ever is; The FIFA World Cup.
Entering the ultimate round as one heavy favourite, France delivered when it mattered the most. Croatia, who had never played a FIFA World Cup final in their history, despite losing the game, won everyone’s hearts. It was heartbreaking, but that’s football for you. As Alex Ferguson said after the 199 UEFA Champions League final, “Football, bloody hell.”
It were France who broke the deadlock in as early as the 18th minute. Ironically, it wasn’t the French player who found the net. In what can be termed as one of the saddest moments of his footballing career, striker Mario Mandzukic deflected Antoine Griezmann’s free-kick into his own net. Croatia responded firmly, and for the fourth time in this FIFA World Cup, score after going one nil down.
Only one stat matters…

The horror for Croatia followed when a certain Blaise Matuidi header struck Ivan Perisic’s hand and thanks to a VAR review, France were awarded a penalty. Antoine Griezmann stood up and sent Subasic the other way, making it 2-0 for his team.
Try as they might, Croatia – despite enjoying the majority of possession – just couldn’t find the right pass. France, on the other hand, waited for their chance and it finally came in the 59th minute when midfielder Paul Pogba finished off in absolute style. Just six minutes on and France scored their fourth and guess what, it was Mbappe who did with one of the goals of the season.
Croatia pulled up back thanks to a howler from Hugo Lloris, but that was it.
As they say on the internet, France won the game, Croatia won the HEARTS.
