Las Vegas Police have confirmed they will question Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo over the rape claims, accused by a model, Kathryn Mayorga.
The story dates way back to 2009 when Ronaldo allegedly sexually assaulted Mayorga after inviting her in a penthouse suite in the United States. The Las Vegas police reopened the case last week when Mayorga shared the story. The police also added that they have taken Mayorga’s medical sexual assault kit.
According to the Mirror, Mayorga had initially denied to name the harasser, as she rather opted to agree on a settlement with the former Manchester United forward for £288,000. The deal was simple; never discuss the case in public. The Las Vegas police had then – in 2009 – confirmed they investigated the case, but since they had no stern evidence, the case was dusted.
In August this year, though, she approached the police, asking them to reopen the case and gave them further details about the case. But as Ronaldo lives in a different country, making a strong contact was extremely difficult. The Police, however, have now commented that although they are unsure about the time, they will question Ronaldo over the case.
“We certainly do not know yet when it will happen… but at some point, we will have to listen to him,” quotes a report from The Mirror.
Ronaldo was quick in his reaction and testified himself with a tweet, saying that he “firmly denies the accusations being issued against him,” but it seemed the damage was already done. There are possibilities that he might lose some of his sponsorship deals if convicted for the crime. Sporting giants Nike have long been associated with the forward and have been deeply disturbed with these incidents.
Another one of Ronaldo’s high-profile clients are EA Sports, and they have already taken firm steps over the same. As of now, Ronaldo was spotted with his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez at a rooftop bar in Lisbon, for a reported ‘secret meeting’ with his lawyers. Meanwhile, his mother and his sister have backed the forward and took to Twitter, posting his image in a Superman cape.
