Memphis Depay recently won a Goal of the Year award and wore a Michael Jackson-styled jacket to the event where he collected it. He strut down the catwalk and posed for cameras in his rather daring fashion statement. Michael Jackson popularized the sort of band player uniform back when he ruled the pop world in the ’90s. Memphis must have thought it would be a good idea to commemorate the pop idol and look good while doing it.
Depay certainly made his claim to fame when he scored five goals in 15 games and his goal against Toulouse in March was a stunner that deserved recognition. Depay turned two defenders near the half-way line and then lobbed a brilliant goal over the keeper.
Depay commented on his goal after the game saying, “I saw the goalkeeper in the first half already standing (away) from his goal, so I kept it in the back of my head. I thought ‘This is my chance’ so I turned and shot. I didn’t even see the ball go in, but I heard fans going crazy.”
From the video, Depay looked like he really ceased the moment when he saw the goalkeeper leave his post, his on-point lob was clearly nothing short of pure perfection. Depay got the celebrity attention he deserved both on and off the field, and rightly so. Watch the video of the goal here:
