Lionel Messi is known for his style and sartorial choices off the ground. The player has also collaborated with various brands to launch fashionable pieces. Following the footsteps of a few other athletes, Messi is now ready to join the club with his own fashion line. The Argentine and Barcelona icon has partnered with MGO to create an apparel line – Messi.
MGO, whose creative director is Ginny Hilfiger, sister of designer Tommy Hilfiger, will launch an e-commerce portal called ‘The Messi Store’ where this line will be showcased. The soft launch with product teasers will be followed by a full rollout in August.
A report from ESPN says that a limited quantity of items will be personally signed by the Barcelona player as part of the launch campaign. Some particular products will also be given limited edition releases and these will complement the core range of items. Messi’s sister María Sol will be the focal point representing the player with the 25-year-old being instrumental in the creative aspect of the project.
The collection is due to launch in July of this year and will be mainly a menswear line with sports elements incorporated into the apparel. The brand is set to be a menswear lifestyle line with a sporty feel. The range set to be launched via the online portal ‘The Messi Store’.
In mid-September, the brand will partner with Savile Row’s designer Richard James as well as the English shoe brand Tricker’s for a small capsule that will be offered at Santa Eulalia, a high-end specialty store in Barcelona that was established in 1843.
The Messi x Richard James tailored clothing will also be available in London Persona, a brand and store created by one of MGO’s partners, Julian Groves. The clothing collection will also only be available in limited quantities.
Tmall, the Chinese online site, will also launch a ‘Messi store’ this fall, the report has quoted Ginny as saying.
Messi, 31, is widely viewed as one of the greatest football players of all time. The icon, who during his entire professional career with Barcelona has won 34 trophies with the La Liga club, has a reported net worth of $400 million and the profits of this clothing line will only add to his bounty.
The player has given his proceeds for charity time and again. As one of his charitable initiatives, Messi has partnered with UNICEF and also created the Leo Messi Foundation, which supports access to health care, education and sport for children.
