Brazil are through to the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, after they defeated Mexico 2-0 at the Samara Stadium on Monday.
It was El Tri who started out more positively and put their South American opponents under some early pressure but failed to make the most of their promising counter-attacks. And it would go on to be the story of the game, with Mexico huffing and puffing while the Selecao took the lead through a sliding finish from talisman Neymar six minutes into the second period, before he went on to tee up substitute Roberto Firmino for the second late on in the game.
The result ensured Brazil’s qualification to the final eight of the 21st edition of the World Cup, while it also meant Mexico were knocked out at the Round of 16 stages for the seventh straight occasion.
