Not very long ago, very few football fans had heard the name of French striker Antoine Griezmann. But, now, with European heavyweights like Manchester United, Barcelona all chasing him, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the 26-year old has the world at his feet.
Born in Macon, France, on 21 March, 1991, Griezmann started out with local club UC Macon at the age of six years. In 2005, when on a trial with Montpellier, the attacker impressed scouts from Spanish side Real Sociedad and the club took him on a week-long trial, before offering him a youth contract.
Having spent four years with the youth sides at Sociedad, Griezmann's big break arrived in 2009, when he impressed then manager Martin Lasarte on the pre-season tour, which translated into a call-up for the senior side. He made his first-team debut in September 2009, in a Copa Del Rey match against Rayo Vallecano and it would only be fair to say that there has been no looking back ever since.
Having signed his first professional contract in 2010, Griezmann established himself as an integral part of the first-team and went on to score 52 goals in 201 appearances for La Real before he was captured by Atletico Madrid in 2014.
It is with the Los Rojiblancos where the Frenchman truly announced himself as a forward of the highest pedigree, consistently breaking the 25-goal barrier season after season. Griezmann enjoyed his best campaign in the 2016/17 campaign, when he netted 32 goals in all competitions, finishing in 3rd place in the Ballon d'Or race behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Griezmann came close to leaving Atletico in 2017, amid strong interest from Premier League giants Manchester United, but decided to stay put, owing to a transfer ban imposed on the club. Continued to be linked with a big move, the 26-year old is destined for much better things and has it all to etch his name in history as one of the best of his era.
