In one of the most tragic incidents in football, 96 Liverpool FC fans lost their lives during a FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. As many as 766 fans were also injured. A lot of Liverpool fans showed up late for the match due to some unscheduled roadworks. To ease the congestion forming outside the stadium, the police opened two sides of the gate leading to the centre pens, behind the Liverpool goal, not taking into account the crowd already there. As a result, many lost their lives in the stampede and many were left injured. The Hillsborough Disaster happens to be the deadliest stadium-related incident in British history.
