Two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso has said his former teammate Lewis Hamilton is one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen.
Hamilton is well on his course of winning his fifth world championship should he grabs the win at the United States Grand Prix and his championship rival Sebastian Vettel finishes lower than second. That being done, Hamilton will become only the third driver in the history of this sport to grab five world titles.
Speaking of the context, Hamilton’s former McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso has said that he is extremely happy that it is Hamilton who has achieved the feat from this generation of drivers. And also mentioned him amongst his favourite five which includes the likes of Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
“It is difficult to compare different times and different ways to win those championships,” said the Spaniard, according to BBC.
“Lewis probably winning five now, same as Fangio, it is a great achievement, and if one had to do it in our generation, I am happy it is him.
“He showed the talent and commitment. When the car was dominating he won and when it wasn’t he still put in performances to show his talent. That is difficult to see these days.”
As things stand, Hamilton sits 67 points clear off his championship rival, having won six of his past seven races, and while reacting to the comparisons with Fangio, the Brit said, “Fangio is like the godfather of the sport for us drivers. It is crazy to think I am embarking on a similar number of championships.”
