Lakhs of tourist flock Odisha every year to soak in its rich heritage, spiritual aura and relax by its shores. However, the number is going to multiply several times in the coming month this year as Hockey Men’s World Cup is scheduled to take place in Bhubaneshwar during November.
All geared up to host the big event, Odisha government is now also offering special tour package called ‘Odisha by Day and Hockey by Night’ to lure more and more tourists to the city.
Under these packages, sports lovers coming to the city can visit popular tourist sites in and around the city during day time and watch the matches at night.
However, if you are an avid traveler and keen to know about the places you must visit once you are in the city, here is your complete guide.
Odisha is home to few of the most breathtaking beaches of the country. Apart from the popular ones, most of the beaches here are untouched and spec clean. You can come here to jog or simply sit and soak in the beauty of the place. Few beaches you must visit here are Konark-Puri sea beach, Chandipur beach, Rishikulya beach and Astagang beach, among several others.
Konark Sun Temple
You must visit the Konark Sun Temple, which is around 1.5 hours drive from Bhubaneshwar. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and attracts lots of tourists every year.

About 15km from Brahmapur is the beautiful town of Gopalpur. An ancient sea port, the place is relaxed and has a laidback feel. So, in case there are no matches and you plan to stay at a beautiful location for a day or two, you can book a nice sea facing resort here.

Very often, when travelling in a car, we pass by certain places that deeply intrigue us and we secretly vow to ourselves that one day, we will make time and go check place out. When I lived in Kolkata, I used to stare at the Parshwanath Temple in Belgachhia every single day. Even today when I go home, I keep looking at it from my cab window and tell myself, "One day …" . A similar thing happened to me in Hyderabad earlier this year. Twice did I cross a huge temple in the last eight months and both times did I make the prudent choice of expressing my wish to visit the place out loud in front of @hina.pande. And because I have the most wonderful flatmates who pay attention and care, Hina made sure that I got my wish on my birthday. Built by the Odia community in Hyderabad on Road No. 12, Banjara Hills, the temple is a replica of the original Jagannath Temple in Puri. Spacious, clean, well maintained and very peaceful, I was immediately drawn to the murals on the walls surrounding the courtyard, especially to the ones depicting the ten avatars of Vishnu. We learnt that the temple was built using red sandstone, approximately 600 tonnes of which was imported from Odisha! The structure even has a Singhadwara with two lions perched on the two sides of one of the entrances, like the one in Puri. After eating prasadam and indulging in quite a few pieces of khaja and gawja (sweetmeats), Hina, @winebiibber and I did not miss the evening light and sound show in Hindi. Narrating the story of the emergence of Lord Jagannath through the dance form of Odissi, the entire presentation has been designed keeping the structure of the temple in mind and is projected on the heavily textured external wall of the second shikhara. The visuals flowed from the tip to the base of the structure, creating an illusion of the descent of heavenly bodies on earth. What a divinely calm place to visit on one's special day. #JagannathTemple #Birthday2018 #BirthdayWeekend #HelloHyderabad #HyderabadDiaries #Hyderabad_Igers #HyderabadInstagrammers #IgersHyderabad #mypeople #LifewiththeEnlightenedOne #LordJagannath #HinduTemple #LordKrishna

Once in Odisha, it’s almost mandatory to visit the popular Jagannath temple located in Puri. An important pilgrimage destination, the temple is famous for its annual Ratha Yatra, during which three main deities of the temple are pulled on huge temple cars.
