Akshay Kumar has announced that he will be playing the role of legendary hockey Indian player Balbir Singh in the hockey biopic named ‘Gold’, which will be based on Indian hockey team’s historic maiden triumph as a free nation at the 1948 Olympics in London. The movie is slated for a release on 15th August in 2018 on the Independence Day.
The sports period film is set in the backdrop of the 1948 London Olympics and narrates the story of independent India’s historic first gold medal win at the Olympics.
India won its maiden gold medal in Hockey as an independent nation at the 1948 London Olympics, when the team, led by Kishan Lal, won the gold medal.
The film will be produced by Excel entertainment and will be directed by Reema Kagti.
Sports biopics have become quite a trend in India after the success of movies such as Pan Singh Tomar, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and MS Dhoni- The Untold Story.
Akshay Kumar has now also made a niche for himself by making patriotic films and the movie ‘Gold’ will continue this trend and Kumar will indeed be hoping to strike gold at the box office with this movie.
