Shanti Devi was a terror for other kabaddi teams during her hay days. The former star of Bihar’s kabaddi team, Shanti Devi has represented her state in more than 10 national games.
She even captained her state’s kabaddi team in 1983 and 1984, and even won a silver in the Guwahati National Games. More than three decades have now passed and all Shanti Devi has is good old memories of her sporting days and nothing else.
Once her sporting career got over, the real-world worries engulfed the athlete. As one can guess, the government conveniently ignored her achievements, and didn’t bother to provide her a job and any financial security.
Once she realized her achievements are of no value to the people in power, she quit sports and started selling vegetables on the streets of Jamshedpur to fight poverty.
Over the years, her story did get some media coverage time and again but Shanti Devi’s life didn’t change. Though several politicians promised her many things, nobody practically did anything for her.
In 2014, kabaddi was brought into limelight with the launch of first ever Pro-kabaddi League. The whole country got glued to the sport but Shanti Devi didn’t bother to check out any details about the same. Her one and only aim in life is to earn and arrange for food for her family.
