The 6th season of Pro Kabaddi League is already through the halfway mark and teams are fighting it out to find a place in the playoffs. While all the attention are been gained by the players of various franchises, the referees too are quietly doing their job on the side of the mat.
They are the people wearing the black jersey and judging the match and today we talk about female referee Sasmita Das who has been leading the charge on the mat.
Sasmita is a former high jumper from Odisha who switched track for mat after creating many state records to her name. She had to bow out of athletics due to appendix operation but owes her success to coach Suryakant Mahant.
Sasmita cleared the exam needed to be given to become an official and have been part of Pro Kabaddi League for past four seasons. Apart from referring in Kabaddi, the 42-year-old is also an LIC agent. She got her maiden assignment in 2014 when she was asked to referee in National Junior Kabaddi Championship which was held in Patna.
Speaking to Times of India she said that 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in Ahmedabad last year was the significant event in her career ” It was a proud moment for me to be officiating at the World Cup last year. The reception i received when i came back home was just wonderful. The entire world’s focus was on India and our nation winning the tournament was an icing on the cake” she said.
