India’s quest for its first medal continues. The tenth day of Rio Olympics again turned out to be a mixed day in terms of result for India. While shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth shone, discus thrower Seema Punia and boxer Vikas Krishan crashed out.
Here’s how the day panned out for India:
Seema Punia crashed out: India’s only hope in discus throw Seema Punia failed to qualify for the women’s discus finals. She was required to thrown as far as 66 meters but the Punia’s best throw was just 57.58 meters. Her second throw was disqualified and that hampered her chances of going to the finals.
Vikas Krishan too failed to impress: India was watching Vikas Krishan very closely as he was the one who looked quite close to winning a medal for India. On Monday, those hopes were crushed too as Krishan went down 0-3 to Melikuziev Bektemir of Uzbekistan in men’s middleweight 75kg quarterfinals.
Shuttlers shine: After Saina Nehwal’s ouster from the Olympics, the weight of hope lay on PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth. The shuttlers did not disappoint and won their pre-quarterfinal matches. While Sindhu beat Chinese Taipie’s Ying Tzu Tai 21-13, 21-15, Srikanth defeated Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen.
