The win also took Michael Phelps in the records book for yet another time. The gold medal performance has made him only the first swimmer in the history of Olympics to win four successive gold medals in one event.
No Olympian has more medals than Phelps, who is 31 years old.
Phelps had a strong competition coming from Japan’s Kosuke Hagino and China’s Shun Wang. The Japanese was just two seconds behind Phelps and settled for silver. On the other hand, Shun Wang took home the bronze.
Phelps, who completed the race in one minute 54.66 seconds has to his name twice as many gold medals as anyone else. He surpassed Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina.
The 31-year-old had retired after the 2012 London games before returning to the sport in 2014. Apart from 22 medals, he has 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in Olympics.
