We have seen Gautam Gambhir leading his franchise team Kolkata Knight Riders to title wins twice but there is more to his captaincy stints. Gambhir once led India against New Zealand. During the reigns of Mohammad Azharuddin, it was generally Ajay Jadeja who proved to be his deputy. Jadeja led India in 13 ODIs and India stood on the winning podium in 8 clashes.
Virender Sehwag is another who has been a “regular” acting captain for India. He was the captain in 4 Test matches for India where they won 2 matches and drew 1. In ODI cricket, Sehwag was the captain in 12 matches and registered 7 victories.
Polly Umrigar didn’t get many matches to lead team India but when the batting star took over from Ghulam Ahmed in the 2nd Test of the 5-match series in 1955-56 against New Zealand, he anchored India to 2-0 ein in that series.
