And India’s Hima Das has created history. The 18-year-old athlete ran for Gold at the 400-metre event at the IAAF World U20 Championship. With this accomplishment, Hima became the first Indian athlete to clinch gold in the World Championship, which is being held in Tampere, Finland.
Hima recorded a time of 51.46 seconds, while Andrea Miklos of Romania clinched silver with a personal best time of 52.07 seconds. Taylor Manson of the US registered 52.28 seconds to finish third.
As the country woke up to the news, congratulatory messages poured in for the athlete. Who’s who from the sports and Bollywood fraternities came out in open to send across their best wishes to the daughter of a rice farmer from Assam.
