Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova may be the best of friends off the tennis court, but on court their rivalry is the one that always produces epic encounters. The fourth round clash at the US Open in 2014 was one such encounter.
The game was stretched into a deciding set after Wozniacki won the first set 6-4 while the Russian hit back by winning the second set 6-2. The third set saw Sharapova trying to save three break points on serve and down 1-2. Yet again, Sharapova had multiple opportunities to close out the point but failed. Wozniacki was all over the court trying to return everything that Sharapova threw at her.
Sharapova charged to the net and sliced a return which again had the former world no.1 engage in a sprint. Making use of her tall frame and the resultant long reach, Wozniacki managed to return the ball which Sharapova could have hit anywhere on court and won the point. However, it was not to be. Sharapova’s slice rammed into the net. An opportunity went begging. Wozniacki was ecstatic and urged the crowd to egg her on. The missed opportunity led to Sharapova losing the serve and she managed to win only one more game in the final set. Wozniacki won the final set 6-2 and dumped Sharapova out of the tournament in an emphatic manner.
