Indian captain Mahesh Bhupathi has named the Indian squad for the Davis Cup which will play the away tie against Canada in Edmonton and unsurprisingly, Leander Paes has again been left out. The team consists of Indian young guns Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni with the experienced Rohan Bopanna completing the line-up. India will head into the away tie as heavy underdogs against a what is likely to be a strong Canadian squad.
The squad has great potential though to cause an upset as three of the four guys in the squad have had a brilliant year. Yuki Bhambri stunned one an all with his performances in the Citi Open in Washington, causing some massive upsets. Similarly, Ramkumar Ramanathan also has a victory over Dominic Thiem, one of the top players in the world currently, to his name this season. Rohan Bopanna too has had one of the best years of his career, winning his maiden Grand Slam at the French Open in the mixed doubles category.
Leander Paes being left out of the World Group tie against Canada will come as a no surprise for those who have followed the developments closely. It was expected that the legendary player would be left with the AITA already hinting at the possibility. Before the squad was picked, AITA Secretary Hironmoy Chatterjee had told Hindustan Times, “We are following norms. There are players, who are ranked higher than Leander. How can you ignore someone like Bopanna who is ranked 21. And the captain has the prerogative to have a squad of his choice. All doors are open for him. But he has to improve his ranking. We go by the rankings.”
