Defending champion Garbine Murguruza failed to defend her title as she crashed out in the second round of Wimbledon 2018 at All England Club on Thursday. The no 3 seed was stunned by Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
After Murguruza’s exit the women’s draw has been left wide open. Earlier Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova, Maria Sharapova and Sloane Stephens all exited from the tournament. With most of the players from the top 8 already gone, No 1 seed Simona Halep and No 7 seed Karolina Pliskova are the only two seeded players from top eight that are remaining in the tournament. it is the first time at Wimbledon in the Open era that only two of the top eight seeds have made it through to the third round.
After her stunning loss Murguruza said “She played big today. She took a lot of risks, and it worked for her,” I also think that my level today was not where I wanted it to be. That’s also why she could develop that kind of level. It’s a little bit sad… but she played great.”
