Wayne Rooney
If there ever was a simplistic controversy child in recent times when it comes to English football, then it has to be Wayne Mark Rooney. It’s his ability to leave a “mark” that’s made his name more recognizable both in the footballing and media sense. The Baby-faced assassin started out in the Blue Side of Merseyside as a 16 year old that turned heads the minute he was spotted in first team action as people chanted “Who are ya?” whenever he touched the ball.
That soon changed as he announced himself with that goal against Arsenal and the name stood firm in the minds of football supporters. Soon after his days at Everton, he was picked out by Manchester United where Sir Alex Ferguson played Connoisseur and knew that Wayne Rooney was one for the future, as was evident by everyone possible.
His start at Manchester United was filled with fireworks as he scored a hat-trick against Fenerbahce as an18 year old which made him the youngest scorer of a Champions League treble. Surely his name was etched to be on the wall of fame as Manchester United only got better ever since he arrived. Rooney was all about goals as Ferguson entrusted in him the faith of a seasoned professional. The Theatre of Dreams soon became the Theatre of Records for the Golden Boy as he overtook Bobby Charlton’s goal-scoring record at both Old Trafford and The Wembley Stadium.
This was possible with a prolonged fruitful career at his club and a fruitless spell with his nation. Along with personal records, he’s also accumulated a quintet of Premier League titles, a Champions League crown and Europa League title along with a host of domestic trophies. He’s never shied away from the Paparazzi either as he’s caught red-handed while trying to be too pernicious.
After having lost the pace he had as a youngster, he was gradually demoted to a deeper role in midfield which reduced his impact on the game. He loved playing Liverpool so much that he had to return to Scouse-nation as Everton brought him in on a free transfer that saw him switch places with Romelu Lukaku.
At home, he was back to scoring goals from the half-way line and at age 32, he’s now being fine-tuned to learn the inner cravings of a football manager from fellow controversialist Sam Allardyce as he will probably finish his career there or move onto a final pasture which could seal his place in Premier League glory, as if that acrobatic goal against Manchester City didn’t.
