India’s daughter Sakshi Malik brought laurels to her country when she defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova in Women’s freesyle 58Kg wrestling, claiming India’s first medal at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The medal ended India’s long wait for their first medal at the Rio Olympics. The 23-year-old wrestler was not at her best for the major part of the bout but in the last few second, she made a grand comeback to clinch the bronze medal.
After winning the medal, Sakshi said that her mother had called her asking whether she was tired after the bout to which she replied, “Who gets nervous after winning the medal for your country?”
On being asked what she would like to do once she is back in India, the joyful wrestler said, “”I want to go home and eat aloo parathas. I had to maintain a strict diet and they would never serve those in the Olympics.”
Sakshi and her family had to fight against all odds to see her daughter win like this today. Her mother said that this win has given a fitting reply to those who felt that women cannot be wrestlers.
