There would be no doubt that it was about time for Kofi to enter the top tier of matches and feature in the main events in WWE. The newly crowned WWE champion has had a vastly decorated career, but he never really made it to the top as an individual celebrity.
For the longest time in his career, Kofi has been in the middle-tier of WWE celebrities mostly winning the US Championship or the Intercontinental championship. The 37-year-old also had a failed attempt at being in the main event after he was brutally defeated by then 6-time champion Randy Orton. It is the tag-team championship victories and reigns that have brought gold into Kofi’s career.
Now that Kofi has finally stepped onto the big stage, let us look at his journey and how it was about time for Kofi to rise to the peak.
The Ghana-born wrestler entered the scene back in 2008 when he was part of a supplemental draft. Soon after breaking onto the scene courtesy of this draft, Kofi won the intercontinental championship at the Night of Champions, defeating Chris Jericho. It was the same year when Kofi went on to start his reign in the tag team championship scene. He teamed up with CM Punk back then.
Tag Team Championship Era
It all started off when Kofi was paired up with CM Punk and they went on to life the WWE World Tag Team Titles. In 2011, there was a new tag team partner for Kofi Kingston – Evan Bourne, the high flyer. They held on to the WWE Tag Team Titles for 146 days.
Later, in 2012, he was paired with R-truth. Without leaving any space for critics, Kofi went on to win another tag team gold with his new partner.
Come 2014, it seemed like Kofi’s career had peaked too early and it was coming to an end. However, it was not the end for Kofi, Xavier Woods broke onto the scene and a team of these two with Big E formed ‘New Day’. This team went onto win the gold yet again and had the longest reign (483 days).
While there was some doubt about whether Kofi will be able to rise to the top or not, the answers were found at WrestleMania 35. When Kofi has a lucky break into the Elimination Chamber match, one would have imagined that this was the year for the high-flyer.
Come WrestleMania 35, Kofi Kingston was finally a part of the main event featuring in a WWE championship match against Daniel Bryan. Kofi went on to win the match and win his first ever WWE championship.
It has been quite the journey for Kofi Kingston mainly full with mid-tier matches, Intercontinental Championships, Tag Team titles and out of the world saves in Royal Rumble matches.
The Ghanian has finally ranked to the top tier and main events, let us hope this WWE championship reign lasts as long as his Tag Team Titles reign.
